FUJITSU TEN LIMITED

FUJITSU TEN LIMITED (FUJITSU TEN*1), in collaboration with FUJITSU LABORATORIES LTD.*3, has developed Multi-Angle Vision™, the world's first*2 peripheral monitoring system for supporting safe driving through displaying a three-dimensional bird's-eye view from various perspectives around the vehicle. This has been commercialized into a multi-angle full-perimeter monitor in a joint effort with Toyota Motor Corporation and will be launched as a Toyota dealer option*4 in three car models, namely the Prius, Alphard and Vellfire, from May 6 (Thursday). This product will also go on display at the FUJITSU Forum 2010 to be staged at the Tokyo International Forum on May 13 (Thursday) and 14 (Friday).

[Project Background/ITS Activities of the FUJITSU Group]

Expectations in recent years are being increasingly directed to systems for monitoring the area around vehicles with a view to supporting safe driving. We have been working on developing technologies that utilize cameras and millimeter wave radar sensors, etc. Also, in order to strengthen ITS*5 associated operations of the FUJITSU Group, we established a dedicated organization in April 2009 with a view to bolstering collaboration between groups and speeding up the vehicle application and commercialization of ICT*6 in the FUJITSU Group. Multi-Angle VisionTM is the first concrete realization of this. This product, developed through combining FUJITSU LABORATORIES image processing technology, FUJITSU SEMICONDUCTORS*7 in-vehicle image processing LSI technology, FUJITSU TEN automotive HMI*8 technology and vehicle fitting technology, has realized peripheral monitoring view that offers unprecedented safety and peace of mind to drivers. In future, through further bolstering ties with the FUJITSU Group and extending ICT to vehicles, we are committed to providing more advanced products in three fields, namely linking cars with society, linking cars with people, and linking cars with cars and cars with infrastructure.

[Outline of Multi-Angle Vision™]

Multi-Angle Vision™ is a system that generates three-dimensional CG images of the vehicle and area around a vehicle through using an ECU*9 to conduct real-time high-speed computing of vehicle peripheral images taken by four cameras attached to the front, rear, left and right mirrors of the vehicle. Whereas conventional products displayed the road surface around the vehicle as viewed from above through converting and synthesizing planar camera images, this product gives a whole new perspective through generating three-dimensional bird's-eye images that include the vehicle and the surrounding scenery, and users can change the viewpoint. Through connecting this system to a car navigation system and displaying bird's-eye images on the car navigation display, driver visibility is assisted over a wider range thereby supporting safe driving when reversing the vehicle in parking situations or when making right and left turns at intersections with poor visibility.
Regarding camera fittings to door mirrors, we have achieved better design and higher quality (reduced wind noise and vibration) through technical collaboration with the major door mirror maker Murakami Corporation*10
