@FUJITSU TEN LIMITED (Headquarters: Kobe, President: Takamitsu Tsuchimoto, Capital: 5.3 billion yen) , in collaboration with Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., has developed "ASIC(*2) for Demodulation of OFDM(*1)," a system that facilitates the stable reception of Digital Terrestrial TV broadcasts while traveling in a car, and "Image Processing ASIC" for the display of digital TV pictures and an on-TV operation screen for automotive installation. FUJITSU TEN LIMITED has also developed "Digital TV Tuner for Automobiles," which is equipped with the ASICs mentioned above.
@The company will send this "digital TV tuner for automobiles" to an exhibition of "WORLD CONGRESS ON ITS NAGOYA,AICHI 2004" which will be held in Nagoya City starting on October 19, 2004.

@Digital Terrestrial TV broadcasting, which provides sophisticated services such as high-definition video/audio and Data service, was begin in December 2003 in the three major regions of Kanto, Chukyo and Kinki. By the end of 2006, Digital Terrestrial TV will be broadcasted nationwide. As a national policy it is determined that existing analogue broadcasting will be expected to cease transmission by July 2011.

@Given the emergence of Digital Terrestrial TV broadcasting, service involving mobile broadcasting is envisioned in addition to broadcasts for household use. Although the stable reception of pictures on a mobile object is possible, because it is based on the assumption that pictures are displayed on a small screen, the amount of image data is small and the image quality is inferior to that of a broadcast intended for the household recipient. Additionally, it is difficult to receive broadcasts for household purposes with a mobile object (TV designed for automobiles) in a drive at a speed of over 35km per hour.

@We have therefore developed "Digital TV Tuner for Automobiles," a system that facilitates the high quality reception of broadcasts for household use even with a mobile device (such as TV designed for automobiles). This TV tuner features the newly developed "ASIC for Demodulation of OFDM" and "Image Processing ASIC." It was impossible to maintain high quality broadcast reception while driving at high speed, but our development has made it possible.

@"ASIC for Demodulation of OFDM" incorporates a system and circuits that we have developed independently in order to solve various reception difficulties inherent with the mobile environment. A diversity reception (*3) using an antenna developed for digital TV has also been added. Thus it is now possible to receive broadcasts for household use even when driving at 100 k.p.h. Additionally, with this ASIC the multiple OFDM demodulator circuits needed for reception with TV for automotive use are integrated into one package, thereby keeping the size of the tuner to a minimum.

@"Image Processing ASIC" reduces picture distortion even in the event a broadcast is interrupted while the car is moving (e.g. in a tunnel or between high-rise buildings) by maintaining the screen that was displayed immediately before the interruption occurred. Performances such as touch-panel operation (specific to TV for automobiles), an interface for front seat and back seat displays, etc., have also been realized, and ASIC is incorporated for the necessary processing to provide Digital Terrestrial TV broadcasting on a display screen in the car.

yMain Features of Digital TV Tuner for Automobilesz
¡It is possible to receive stable, high-definition pictures while traveling in a car.
¡The size is reduced by integrating several circuits into one package.
¡Picture distortion that might otherwise occur due to the interruption of electric waves is controlled (e.g. inside a tunnel, etc.) by maintaining a screen displayed immediately before the interruption occurred.

yGlossaryz
(*1) OFDMFOrthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
This is the term used for a method of radio-wave modulation, as adopted for use in Digital Terrestrial TV broadcasting.
(*2) ASICFApplication SpecificIC
This is a generic name for the large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs) designed and manufactured for specific purposes.
(*3) Diversity ReceptionF
This term applies to a method that employs several antennas and demodulation parts. It selects or combines an antenna and a demodulation part in a good reception condition according to changes in the radio wave environment in order to receive radio waves.
