Premium Audio System to be mounted on a car developed, which reproduces real sound as if music players were playing in front

FUJITSU TEN LIMITED (Head office: Kobe, Japan, President: Mr. Takamitsu Tsuchimoto, Capital: \5.3 billion) has developed the Premium Audio System to be mounted on a car on the basis of gthe time domain theoryh, which presents clear and real sound enjoyable with a presence as if music players were playing music in a car. We are going to exhibit a prototype of this model at the gMobile Electronics Showh (sponsored by the Mobile Electronics Show Execution Committee) , which will be held on June 22 (Sat.) and 23 (Sun.), 2002 at gMakuhari Messeh in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

gThe time domain theoryh(*1) focuses on reproductively of the time domain in addition to the frequency domain, the conventional mainstream audio theory. It is an idea to reproduce such sound as close to the original sound as possible through a correct reproduction of a time elapse (sound wave) from a gsoundh (air vibration) generation to its disappearance.

We put on sale last year in the home audio market, the speaker and the power amplifier under the ECLIPSE TD brand, which were manufactured based on that theory. We have recently developed a new model, which corresponds to such environment and conditions in a car different from those for the home use as a limited space, uneven distances between each speaker and each seat.

The system developed recently is a 3-way model composed of a main speaker of a round-box type (mid-to-high band), a Mid-Lo speaker (mid-to-low band) and a sub-woofer speaker (low band). The realization of the theory needs an elimination of reflecting sound generated through various factors other than greproduced soundh, and the noise generated by the vibration of a speaker conveyed to a car body. We have adopted a floating structure for installation on a car as well like one for the home use in addition to the floating structure, which is designed to avoid a direct contact of a speaker unit on a box. A grand anchor is fixed behind a magnet of a speaker unit to enhance a conversion efficiency from electricity to sound. We have developed a opposed-position type sub-woofer, which sustains 2 pairs of speakers at a back with a joint, as the use of the grand anchor for the sub-woofer would give rise to a weight increase. We have further realized a reproduction of clear and real sound with a clear sound-fixed position like one for the home use, through off-setting the differences in sound-reaching time caused by the distances between speakers and seats with a time alignment function using a digital preamplifier.

With further improvements carried out, we are scheduled to put this model in the market combined with our high-end car audio product, ECLIPSE Sound Monitor within this year, while planning an expansion of sales globally. We have filed 3 applications for patents related to the speaker mechanism and their installation.

[The features of the recently developed audio system]

Installing in a car, a speaker system of 3-way composition (a main BOX speaker (mid-to-high band)/a Mid-Lo speaker (mid-to-low band)/and a sub-woofer speaker (low band)), which ensures a structure and fixing to control unnecessary vibration, we have realized a reproduction of clear and real sound with a clear sound image location like one for the home use, through a time alignment of the differences in sound-reaching time caused by the distances between speakers and seats.

1. Floating structure

A floating structure to avoid a direct contact of a speaker unit on a speaker BOX is adopted in order to eliminate a generation of unnecessary vibration as much as possible other than the gsoundh to be reproduced.

The floating structure is also adopted for installation on a car to reduce sound noise generated by vibration of a speaker conveyed to a car body.

2. Grand anchor

It enhances the conversion efficiency from electricity to sound, a problem caused by the floating structure.

3. Opposed-position type sub-woofer

Adopting a structure which sustains 2 pairs of speakers at a back with a joint, as the use of the grand anchor for the sub-woofer would give rise to a weight increase, we have realized reproduction of low sound good at the transient feature and lighter than in the case of a grand anchor used.

4. Time alignment function

We have taken measures to cope with such environment and conditions as are different from those for the home use, through off-setting the differences in sound-reaching time caused by the distances between speakers and seats (listening positions) with a time alignment function using a digital preamplifier.

[The technology used for each speaker]

‘Main BOX speaker

A 5 cm BOX speaker is adopted for the main speaker, which covers a band of more than 300Hz greatly affecting the sound image location.

In addition to the floating structure to avoid a direct contact of a speaker unit on a speaker BOX, the floating structure is also adopted for installation on a car to reduce sound noise generated by the vibration of the speaker BOX conveyed to a car body. The transient feature is also enhanced by an adoption of the grand anchor.

‘Mid-Lo speaker

Such a structure is adopted as a metallic part does not contact other parts with a buffer filled in order to prevent the vibration of a speaker unit from being conveyed to a car body, in case of the Mid-Lo speaker of the direct-built-in- a- car type. Further, the grand anchor adopted enhances the transient response

‘Sub-woofer speaker
A large sized grand anchor needs to be used in
order to effectively use the grand anchor for a woofer speaker as well, which is adopted for the enhancement of the transient response, but it is not practical for the use in a car due to anincreased weight. Such a structure, accordingly, adopted as a joint sustaining a speaker unit at the back to off-set reactions of each speaker. It enables reproduction of low sound good at the transient response and lighter than in the case of the grand anchor used. The floating structure which avoids a direct contact of a speaker unit

(note 1)The time domain theory
It is an audio theory proposed by Mr. Hiroyuki Yoshii, president of Timedomain Corporation.
