FUJITSU TEN LIMITED (Head office: Kobe City, Hyogo, Japan; President &
Representative Director: Takashi Shigematsu, Capital: ¥5.3 billion) is
currently developing next-generation vehicle-mounted devices under three
general themes of "linking cars with society", "linking
cars with people", and "linking cars with other cars, and cars
with infrastructure". One project is the development of a vehicle-mounted
Android™*3 (equipped with the sophisticated NVIDIA®egra™ 2*1,2 mobile superchip) terminal. A current prototype model of this project will be used as a display model in the NVIDIA (Main office: California, USA; CEO: Jen-Hsun Huang) booth at the 2011 International CES*4, the world's largest consumer electronics trade show, which will be held from Jan. 6 (Thurs) to 9 (Sun.), 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA).
The exhibition will feature a demonstration of this
prototype, which uses the Android™ platform, showing how simple and
easy it is to use its applications that include navigation (Zenrin DataCom "Its-mo
Navi”) and media player (YouTube-compatible*5 Flash™ player) functions. The media player
operates using Android™ 2.2.
Development Background - Supporting Car Networks
The growth of informatization utilizing networks is symbolized by the current rapid expansion of the smartphone market
both within Japan and abroad. Android™ is now a standard platform for providing network connectivity functions, and it provides a
simple and easy method for connecting with various contents and services. For these reasons, Android™ is rapidly being adopted for
mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
In the automobile industry, as next-generation vehicles (such HV, PHV and EV) become more widespread,
it is expected that the networking of cars, including navigation units, will likewise become even more developed.
In response to such changes, FUJITSU TEN is meeting the challenge to create and develop new products and systems under
three general themes of "linking cars with society", "linking cars with people", and "linking cars with other cars,
and cars with infrastructure"quot;.
One of the ways we are meeting the challenge is considering
the future adoption of the AndroidTM to improve automobile connectivity,
and as such we have created a prototype for a vehicle-mounted AndroidTM
terminal. Additionally, we have equipped this prototype with NVIDIA®Tegra™ 2, a mobile superchip with high processing performance and
low power consumption performance.
